The Role of the Governors

Our governors are a dedicated team of volunteers who work closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to ensure our school continues to grow and succeed. They bring a wide range of skills and experience from different backgrounds and receive ongoing training through the Local Authority.

The Board of Governors plays a vital role in promoting the school’s long-term development by setting a strategic framework for school improvement and overseeing its implementation. They help define the school’s values, aims, and objectives, allocate and control the school’s budgets, monitor and evaluate progress, and act as a ‘critical friend’ to the Headteacher—providing both support and challenge.

What Do Governors Do?

Governors help set the school’s vision and strategic direction, ensuring decisions support our long-term goals and values. While the Headteacher manages the day-to-day running of the school, governors provide oversight and accountability in key areas:

  • Vision and Ethos – Ensuring clarity of vision and maintaining the school’s values.
  • Educational Performance – Holding leaders to account for pupil progress and achievement.
  • Financial Oversight – Monitoring the school’s budget and ensuring money is well spent.

How Do Governors Work?

The full governing body meets six times a year and is supported by sub-committees. The two main committees are the Finance & Resources Committee and the Ethos Committee, which meet each term and report back to the full governing body.

Governor Visits and Responsibilities

Governors play an active role in school life by visiting regularly and taking on specific areas of responsibility, including:

  • KS1 and Early Years Key Governor
  • KS2 Key Governor
  • Health & Safety Governor
  • SEND Governor
  • Safeguarding, Attendance, Behaviour, Data Protection, and Pupil Premium Governors

Through these roles, governors:

  • Monitor progress against the curriculum and key priorities
  • Review and update school policies
  • Approve budgets and ensure financial accountability
  • Link the School Development Plan to financial planning

Additional Responsibilities

As a Church of England school, foundation governors help maintain our Christian ethos. The governing body also oversees admissions, health and safety, and, in voluntary aided schools, employment matters.

Who Are Our Governors?

Governors are appointed by different bodies:

  • Foundation Governors – appointed by St Church and the Diocesan Board of Education
  • Local Authority Governor – appointed by Somerset County Council
  • Parent Governors – elected by parents
  • Staff Governors – elected by school staff
